Who killed Jesus and why did He have to die

by Pastor Sal Termini

God revealed four things about Himself in the Old and New Testaments
The judgment of God - His utter hatred for sin and in His holiness he will judge it.

The justice of God - He revealed the finality of His law to judge and punish every person.

The love of God - The great love of God was revealed in sending His Son as the payment for sinning against God and breaking His law.

The passion of Jesus Christ – Jesus laid down His life because of His generous love for us and for His Father.

Matt 1:20-21
21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."

According to the above scripture God sent Jesus to the Jewish people first. Apostle Paul tells us the gospel came to the Jews first.

Rom 1:16-17
16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.

Apostle John writes in his gospel that Jesus came to His own and they received Him not.

John 1:10-12
11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.

There is no doubt God loves the Jewish people because he said so under the Old Covenant and then sent His Son to them to tell them the message of God’s saving work first. He died on the cross for both Jews and gentiles.

Jesus told the Samaritan woman at the well salvation comes through the Jews. God chose the Jewish people as His people to reveal the one true God to the world. Through the law Israel was revealing the awesome and perfect holiness of God. It was an honor and a privilege but it was also a burden and a terrible responsibility. God loved the Jewish people and blessed them. He built a relationship with them and revealed a future plan and a chosen one (Messiah) who would lead them to be fully forgiven and to live in God’s presence forever, without guilt or shame. When God in His timing moved His plan forward from a natural people to a spiritual people Israel failed to obey God and follow His will.

John 1:12-13
12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Heb 3:10
10 Therefore I was angry with that generation,
And said, 'They always go astray in their heart,
And they have not known My ways.'

God who knows all things knew the Jewish people would reject His Messiah. He then used this rejection as an opportunity to include the gentiles in a new covenantal relationship with Him that would surpass the one He had under the Old Covenant.

Eph 3:6
6 This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.

Heb 8:6
6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

Heb 8:7-10
7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.
8 For finding fault with them, he says, Behold, the days come, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:
9 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, says the Lord.
10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:

As a Christian I believe Jesus is the savior of the world. The world’s religions and leaders pale in comparison to the message and person of Jesus Christ. The power of a selfless love He taught and lived is second to none. He lived His life to please God His Father and for others to be restored to Him. Whole civilizations have been built on His practical teachings on how to live our lives every day. Many of the nations of the world today are suffering the consequences for their rejection of God’s will and His Messiah Jesus Christ. God loves the Jewish people as much as other peoples and nations but they will be held accountable with the gentile nations for their rejection of Jesus as Lord.

Rom 2:7-11 NIV
8 But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. 9 There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile; 10 but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 11 For God does not show favoritism.

Rev 1:7
7 Look, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of him. So shall it be! Amen.

God has made many promises to the Jewish people that He will fulfill in some future date concerning land, earthly government, heavenly authority, and earthly possessions. Yet God’s great and final plan revealed to the world is a people made up of both Jews and gentiles called the church. God is calling out of the world people to be the body of Christ.

Gal 3:28-29
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

It is the church of Jesus Christ that is now the people of God. It is those whose sins are washed away in the blood sacrifice of Jesus Christ that are now God’s people a spiritual nation and a kingdom of priests.

God made it clear through Paul that the Mosaic Law cannot bring forgiveness of sin or give someone eternal life. The law kills and judges but it cannot give eternal life.

Gal 3:21-26
21 Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law.
22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.
23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.
24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

The law was meant for three things;

The law revealedthe holiness and perfection of God
The law was meant to reveal the sinfulness of mankind
The law was meant to condemn.

The Bible says, The soul that sins will die. The judgment of God is separation from God’s life and presence which brings death to our whole being. The law cannot give someone back eternal life or a new heart. God allows us to live to choose life or death.

2 Cor 3:6-9
6 He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant-not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
7 Now if the ministry that brought death, which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory, fading though it was, 8 will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious? 9 If the ministry that condemns men is glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness!

The Bible tells us in Ezekiel and later fulfilled in Corinthians that God will give all who receive His Messiah a new heart, life, and a new spirit. The law was glorious because it revealed the awesome holiness of God but it condemned mankind because it revealed our sinfulness and brought death. The New Covenant is not about law but about a substitionary sacrifice that will bring forgiveness and life. It is faith in this substitionary sacrifice first foreshadowed in the Old Testament and then fulfilled in the New Testament that brings men forgiveness and into relationship with God.

Ezek 36:25-27
26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.

Heb 10:16-18
6 "This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the LORD: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them," 17 then He adds, "Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more."

The law was a teacher it taught people what is wrong and right. The system of laws and regulations in Judaism were temporary until the perfect sacrifice brought permanent forgiveness and God’s law could be written on our hearts. It was not the Law of Moses that kept the Jewish people from suffering the judgment of God it was the substitutionary sacrifices that brought forgiveness and blessing.

The Jewish people were to put their faith in the sacrifices for the removal of guilt and the washing away of their sin. An animal substitute was killed and its blood shed and its life given as payment for sin. The Bible says without the shedding of blood their is no removal or forgiveness of sin. It is faith in the blood as proof of a life given that is payment for sin. In effect God sacrificed the life of the animal rather than the person guilty of their sin. When Jesus came He was the perfect sacrifice. The only person of infinite value is God. Jesus is God so His death was of infinite value able to pay for the sin of the whole world. Jesus was God in human flesh that came to die for the sins of the world. Jesus is our substitute punished by God for the sins of the whole world.

Isa 53
Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? 2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. 3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
4 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. 5 but he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. 6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. 8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away. And who can speak of his descendants? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was stricken. 9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth.
10 Yet it was the LORD's will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the LORD makes his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand. 11 After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light [of life] and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Under the Mosaic Law the high priest had to sacrifice once a year for the sins of the nation. It was according to the Mosaic Law that Jesus had to be sacrificed by the high priest. In effect we see God setting up History so that the High priest sacrificed Jesus to fulfill the Law. When Abraham was sacrificing Isaac it is written in the Bible that God gave a ram as a substitute for Isaac. It was God who prepared the lamb to be slain as He did with Abraham and Isaac. The Jews and Romans were instruments in this drama. It is in reality every sinful person ever born who put Christ on the cross and caused His suffering. It was determined by God’s knowledge of all things in the future and according to His predetermined plans how Jesus should die. If we blame the Jewish people for Jesus death we might as well blame ourselves for sinning against God. Remember Jesus is the lamb who is slain before the world even began because God knew mankind would sin and He already had the plan.

Acts 2:23
23 This man was handed over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross.

Anti Semitism like all prejudice is a sin and is evil. It fails to love our neighbor as ourselves. It fails to take into account we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. It is a political decision born of jealousy. It is political manipulation by a particular country or nation for power and control. All races and nationalities have shortcomings and sin. God wants us to love, to see people saved and redeemed not to hate them.

Today radical religions afraid of the power of the gospel move in hatred and violence to try and quench Jesus Christ’s work and His church. These religions teach hate in their schools and in their political systems. These religions will never be accepted by God. Today even in Israel there are laws against sharing the gospel. The Jewish people have joined the gentile nations in their rejection of God’s Son. Political systems built upon atheism and humanism fears the life changing power of the gospel. All over the world Christians suffer persecution. Jesus said a servant is not greater than His master if they hated me they will hate you also.

John 15:18-20
18 "If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. 20 Remember the words I spoke to you: 'No servant is greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.

Jesus Himself said these words to both Jew and gentile alike, Father forgive them for they don’t know what they are doing. In the movie we hear the mockery of the crowd and the religious leader for Him to come down off the cross if he is the Son of God. Many in ignorance still do not understand He could not come down from the cross or we all will die in our sins under the judgment of God. He endured it all for you and I. Jesus came to all men to receive His sacrificial work to bring them forgiveness of sins. Those who reject this sacrifice whether they are Jews or gentiles will suffer God’s judgment. Jesus took the judgment of God upon Himself so we would not have to. The movie depicts God’s hatred for sin and His just judgment against sin. It also shows the love and mercy of God through Jesus Christ. God’s passionate love to save mankind is depicted in Jesus determination to go to the cross and suffer our judgment there. Sin brings consequence both judicial as well as experiential and Jesus bore them both. Let us receive Him as both our savior and our Lord.
