I believe that the great debate of the 21st century will be about reality. Reality can be a vague and nebulous topic. Reality affects society and politics to a great degree. It will shape governments and educational systems. It will affect our children for generations to come. Reality-shaping is a global enterprise. The buzzword for these new realities is called worldview.
There is a great move in this country by liberal forces to reshape reality. Psychology and science will tell us what is moral, right, and good. The old well-worn paths are being discarded. A new paradigm is being set up for future generations to follow. As I watch in horror, these new realities seem to me like a person moving into his new home and promptly tearing up the flowers and leaving the weeds to grow. This new reality is fueled, not by a search for truth, but by the lusts of men's hearts for power, pleasure, and wealth. Questioning these new realities stirs a deep raging anger as it hits the raw nerve of human conscience.
For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools. Rom 1:21 – 22 (NIV)
The new reality is "Science knows all." The social sciences, sociology, psychology are the new religions for the 21st Century. Science is the new god. Science tells us who we are, where we came from and where we are going. Science defines us by its definitions of our origins and our genetic makeup. We are a species, a great ape, and an evolutionary wonder. A wise and loving God who created us with plans and purposes is out, passˇ. We are the product of an accidental force filled with wisdom able to guide us to our genetic destiny. The wonder of science has replaced the so-called superstitions of religion. It is, after all, quite primitive to have religion. Religion is the needed crutch for those whose reality has not grasped the gaping abyss of meaningless death.
Many in the liberal camp believe that a world without religion would be a safe one. This belief flies in the face of reality, as communism, with its atheistic, intellectual and rational beliefs, has devastated the 20th century with more murders than the world can count, as new graves are being discovered every year. Atheism, humanism, naturalism are all related; man is a god and science his power. We are all at the brink of a moral abyss. The human race is about to destroy itself with anarchy and immorality.
Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Rom 1:28 – 31 (NIV)
Without moral absolutes, we have no reality. Without moral absolutes reality is what we make it. The Bible is God's way of revealing a true reality of His creation and its purpose. Man is a spirit with a moral nature that is to conform to truth as God has revealed it.
The reason God gave moral absolutes is so that mankind can live in happiness and prosperity. God designed our nature with an understanding of moral absolutes so we can be at peace with one another. These moral laws are unselfish love defined. They are meant to conquer the lusts of our fallen nature, to free us from causing pain and destruction.
The way back to reality is to respect God and His word. It is through the Judeo-Christian ethic that the greatest civilizations the world has ever known have grown and flourished. Christianity, with all its immaturity, is still the answer to man's needs and wants. The precepts of Christianity are rational, and they work. Christianity brings a moral order, purpose, love, and truth to the forefront of reality. One day, the wise will see that Christianity is rational, intelligent, and its design is flawless in building the kind of world in which we want to raise our children. It is where love is the dominating force, and the wisdom of God is respected.
In respecting the wisdom of God, we align ourselves with God and are able to enter into a relationship with Him. To the sincere seeker, God will reveal the great depths of His heart. He will reveal truth from His word that will bring us happiness. To the honest seeking heart, God will shine through.
But if from there you seek the LORD your God, you will find him if you look for him with all your heart and with all your soul. Deut 4:29 (NIV)
