I will proclaim the name of the Lord. Oh, praise the greatness of our God! He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he. They have acted corruptly toward him; to their shame they are no longer his children, but a warped and crooked generation. Is this the way you repay the Lord, O foolish and unwise people? Is he not your Father, your Creator, who made you and formed you? -Deuteronomy 32:3-6 (NIV)
Today as I watched the political controversy surrounding our country, I couldn't believe the way our constitution was being distorted and reinterpreted to suit the needs of the candidates. Obviously, we need to reform voting procedures so we can eliminate such rancor. I've come to the conclusion that our country is ideologically divided. I watched as the politicians, who seem to no longer believe in one great nation, began dividing up the people into blocks of self-interest groups. We are falling for the old axiom "divide and conquer." We are a nation divided. These agents of division, from political parties consumed with self-interest, are driving our country deeper and deeper into separate camps, dividing our nation. Does anybody ask "what is right and what is wrong?" Should not all of our choices be moral ones? Should not our choices, regardless of whether they benefits us or not, serve the truth? Will we not all be served when we serve what is right? Former President John F. Kennedy wrote a book titled
Profiles In Courage. It is a book about men who stood for the good of their country at great personal expense. Will the democracy that has served us so well sacrifice its people on the altar of greed and expediency? I find it amazing that after all has been said and done, the election may ultimately be determined not by human error or faulty ballots, but by news reports rushing to judgement.
If that's not enough, I am astounded at the amount of smut on the various TV talk shows. The people of this great nation are divided by a great moral chasm. From the moral and social climate, it seems a person cannot admit to being wrong or even attempt to change their bad behavior. It's nearly impossible for people to agree on or even know, whether certain behavior is wrong or not. This powerful and destructive force has been unleashed into our society by
situational ethics. The lives of dysfunctional people are being aired with great mocking and ridicule. We say that, as a society, we have grown since the days of stocks in the middle of Town Square. I don't think so. Every kind of unimaginable and perverted sexual behavior is being spewed from the mouths of certain TV talk show guests. The viler the guest becomes, the more the audience cheers -- until the combatants ("guests") are whipped into a frenzy, leading to even worse behavior! All the while the host stirs them up, generating even higher ratings for the show. We are becoming sick but will not admit it. God saw this in Israel and warned them:
Ah, sinful nation, a people loaded with guilt, a brood of evildoers, children given to corruption! They have forsaken the Lord; they have spurned the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on him. Why should you be beaten anymore? Why do you persist in rebellion? Your whole head is injured, your whole heart afflicted. From the sole of your foot to the top of your head there is no soundness -- only wounds and welts and open sores, not cleansed or bandaged or soothed with oil. -Isaiah 1:4-6 (NIV)
The WWF is a big hit among consumers today. Advertisers are fighting over the market share for men who curse, act violently insane, and disrespect both genders. I watched in horror as young people made obscene gestures to the combatants -- to the great delight of the other adult fans and parents. We say it can never happen to us. But are we, a "civilized" nation, about to fall? Have we reached a level of such immorality that we will revisit the Roman coliseum and persecute again those who believe in civility?
We must change our course before it is too late. It's terrible to think that no matter how evil our behavior; no one is embarrassed or ashamed. The wickedest behavior is becoming acceptable. The foundations of home and society, which bring national health, are being torn apart. Adams and Washington believed democracy would only work when the people have moral absolutes and a fear of God.
Listen to what God has said about those who are so evil that they have no shame:
He who ignores discipline comes to poverty and shame, but whoever heeds correction is honored. -Proverbs 13:18 (NIV)
When wickedness comes, so does contempt, and with shame comes disgrace. -Proverbs 18:3 (NIV)
Therefore the showers have been withheld, and no spring rains have fallen. Yet you have the brazen look of a prostitute; you refuse to blush with shame. -Jeremiah 3:3 (NIV)
Let us lie down in our shame, and let our disgrace cover us. We have sinned against the Lord our God, both we and our fathers; from our youth till this day we have not obeyed the Lord our God. -Jeremiah 3:25 (NIV)
Are they ashamed of their loathsome conduct? No, they have no shame at all; they do not even know how to blush. So they will fall among the fallen; they will be brought down when I punish them," says the Lord. -Jeremiah 6:15 (NIV)
But am I the one they are provoking? declares the Lord. Are they not rather harming themselves, to their own shame? -Jeremiah 7:19 (NIV)
O Lord, we and our kings, our princes and our fathers are covered with shame because we have sinned against you. -Daniel 9:8 (NIV)
Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt. -Daniel 12:2 (NIV)
You will be filled with shame instead of glory. Now it is your turn! Drink and be exposed! The cup from the Lord's right hand is coming around to you, and disgrace will cover your glory. -Habakkuk 2:16 (NIV)
America, the choice is yours.
